Proof, Evidence and Drama in Early Modern England
The final Masterclass of the 2015-2016 session will be delivered by Lorna Hutson, Berry Professor of English at the University of St Andrews.
Professor Hutson will focus explore her own interest in the English participatory justice system, and its relation to drama, as written about it in The Invention of Suspicion (OUP, 2007). She will discuss Quentin Skinner’s recent book on forensic rhetoric in Shakespeare, and distinguish her own approach in her most recent book, Circumstantial Shakespeare (2015). The masterclass should be of interest to those interested in early modern history, social relations and epistemology, as well as those interested in the production of fiction and theatre, since the disposition to think about words as forms of ‘proof’ is crucial to all these areas.
SCEMS Masterclasses are free to attend but advance registration is required.
