Autumn 2015 sees the launch of Sheffield’s new Early Modern Forum

A collaboration between the Centre for Early Modern Studies (SCEMS) and the postgraduate-run Early Modern Discussion Group (EMDG), the Early Modern Forum will be showcasing interdisciplinary research by and for those with ‘early modern’ interests, whatever the department you call home. There will be a mix of speakers drawn from Sheffield and further afield.

What’s special about the Early Modern Forum?

As with all SCEMS activities, the EMF is expected to be accessible to scholars from different backgrounds. Events are scheduled for a regular lunchtime slot (12.10pm on Thursdays); those attending are welcome to bring lunch with them, and papers will finish in plenty of time for those with a 1pm commitment, but with further time for questions and discussion for those who are not obliged to rush off. Hosting will alternate between SCEMS and EMDG.

What’s on the programme?

SCEMS EMF speakers for Autumn 2015 include linguist Dr Melanie Evans (University of Birmingham) and material culture specialist Dr Angela McShane (V&A Museum and Visiting Fellow at Sheffield 2015-2016). The Discussion Group welcome Sarah Ward (Oxford), Adrian Green (Durham), and Sheffield postgraduate Nigel Cavanagh. (Further details can be found in our events pages.)

The SCEMS Visiting Speaker Series will continue to occupy a Thursday evening lecture slot, and there will be no lunchtime session on those Thursdays (15 and 29 October, 26 November, 11 February).

EMF sessions will take place in room G12 at 9 Mappin Street, beginning on Thursday 5th November with Sarah Ward. EMF events are free, but lunch is at your own expense.
