EMDG Tudor Week: Catherine Evans and Helen Newsome

25 February, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

EMDG is delighted to welcome two home-grown speakers to its first event of the new year at the Early Modern Forum…

Catherine Evans (Literature):

“Renew, O Lord, in me a constant sprite”: Temporality in early modern Psalms

Despite the turn from Catholic penance to Protestant repentance, the Psalms remained at the heart of early modern devotional practice. This paper examines how Anne Lok and the Countess of Pembroke deal with the temporal challenges of repentance in their reworkings of Psalm 51.

Helen Newsome (Language):

Lost in the Archives: Reconstructing the Correspondence Networks of Margaret Tudor

This paper will consider the challenges of navigating and understanding archives in an attempt to discover the epistolary voice, character and correspondence networks of Margaret Tudor, Queen of Scots (1489-1541). Considering issues such as cataloguing inaccuracies, distribution networks and scribal practices, I will be recounting the initial challenges and dilemmas that I am facing in my attempts to understand and reconstruct the life and voice of Margaret Tudor.
